E.K.W.U.E.M.E
‘Ekwueme’ is an Igbo word
Literally translated to ‘Talk and Do’.
When we were young and restless,
My friends, especially roommate @annetecedent & I,
Would laugh over the unintentional hilarity
Of Nollywood,
Particularly legends like Amaechi Muonagor
(An icon of his time btw 🏾
🏾
🏾),
Joking about marrying Igbo men
Who understood this nuanced language
And could casually pepper conversations
With Chinua Achebe-style
Proverbs & parables.
How funny, how fun our homes would be!
A futile dream for Anne
As a Yoruba prince HOOKED her,
And she happily lined for the sinking.
And I got my Igbo man…
Parables & proverbs included.🤸🏾♂️🤸🏾♂️🤸🏾♂️
The day after our wedding,
@ibekwe_chijioke showed me a friend’s text:
“Ekwueme!! You said you’d get those jackets!!”
It made me laugh.
The one request CJ had at our wedding,
Was to get these denim jackets
With our inside jokes & stories sewn on.
First of all groom, this is not your wedding!!
With all the madness of wedding planning,
(Swipe left for the crazy you signed up for)
And manning a rapidly decreasing budget,
It just seemed impossible!
Who would make them? When? Where? How?!
So imagine my surprise on my wedding day,
When @soibimari & @3003events
Walked into the reception venue,
Handed me a denim jacket & said
“Cj said to wear this.” ️
Wait. What?! When?! How?! Where?!
You actually got it done??! #OBIM
I was reading Psalm 91 tonight,
When strangely, this story came to mind.
Y’all. The Israelites missed
One of God’s REAL names.
‘EKWUEME’: Talk…and Do.
He gives a promise and He watches over it…
Pushing it through clouds,
Pulling it over mountains,
Stretching it across valleys,
Setting it under seas
To see it come to fruition,
Time & time & time & time again.
I am evidence of this.
“…And every word God gave Samuel to say
Proved reliable. None of HIS words,
Fell to the ground.”
-Psalm 3:19
