Alchemy

Writing is science. I don’t mean to invoke noxious fumes, chemical vials and lab rats to mind, I want to show you instead, the science of experimenting with words. To write is to test new formulas, to mix potent verbs with simple nouns. I write. I merge acidic letters into alkaline words and hope an explosion does indeed occur in my reader’s mind. I hold coined phrases to light, testing validity, sniffing for authenticity. I write. I manipulate grammar and sync syntax. I love to write. Writing is science.

Writing is a science

I often write for an audience of one, certain as I am that no one but me enjoys reading what I write. So I reread my odd letters linking their spindly hands to form blocks of sentences. I smile as my eyes skim and I remember the origin of this metaphor or of that phrase. It is little wonder then that I am so delighted when someone else reads my words and understands every nuanced phrase or the texture of each letter scattered across my page. It is exciting to see someone else hear the silent shout of my voice, to understand the tone holding each letter up. Because truly, I do not know what I think until I read what I write. For someone else to read and understand me, is to have a hand hold my soul’s fingers in its grasp.

Amateur alchemist let loose in a lab of potions that I am; I am always testing words and tones, textures and notes. I am always in search of the perfect mix of alphabet to share my mind.

Writing is science.

(My first assignment from my writing course. We’ve been asked to explain our writing process…hopefully this passes muster as in true Wendelyn style I waited until the due date to draft a response. #Whomp.  In my next life, I will keep to time…

…I guess. )
