Arachnida

Today’s post is in honour of a really really amazing woman I met a looong time ago in the middle of a quiet school in Canterbury, Kent. She made my life a lot easier as we swapped favourite cds and Nigerian stories reminiscing about our lives back at home. When she left us and got married at the ripe young age of twenty three, I was a little surprised…but not that surprised; Rasheeda aka Arachnida had always been mature. She went on to become a doctor showing that a good marriage is actually the blossoming not the lessening of a woman. And today, she has a little baby to cherish and guide…and mold into her very own mini-me. What a thrilling thought! As is always the case when one of your friends does something that confirms you all as grown ups, you’re at once excited…and a little frightened. How quickly we have reached this place of responsibility and expectation. Regardless of that initial fear, it’s always welcome news to see once of your own flourish and bloom. If nothing else it reminds you of the saying, “When God visits your neighbour, it means He’s in your neighbourhood!” *Runs in to make house pretty for God’s arrival* Lol.

Mother’s Heart

I loved you from the very start,
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.
Our life together has just begun
You’re part of me my little one.
As mother with child, each day I grew,
My mind was filled with thoughts of you.
I’d daydream of the things we’d share,
Like late-night bottles and Teddy bears.
Like first steps and skinned knees,
Like bedtime stories and ABC’s.
I thought of things you’d want to know,
Like how birds fly and flowers grow.
I thought of lessons I’d need to share,
Like standing tall and playing fair.
When I first saw your precious face,
I prayed your life be touched with grace.
I thanked the angels from above,
And promised you unending love.
Each night I lay you down to sleep,
I gently kiss your head and cheek.
I count your little fingers and toes;
I memorize your eyes and nose.
I linger at your nursery door,
Awed each day I love you more.
Through misty eyes, I dim the light,
I whisper, “I love you” every night.
I loved you from the very start,
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.
As mother and child our journeys begin,
My heart’s yours forever little one.
