It’s interesting to think that there are so many forms of niceness. I never think I’m nice, I much prefer to be thought of us practical. If there’s something that needs doing, I’d like to think that if I felt it was necessary or believed in it, I would roll up my sleeves and volunteer to. When people mistake this for niceness it terrifies me…. because I always think of ‘niceness’ as sweetness, which I’m anything but. I’m sarcastic and likely to make a joke at your expense if it’s funny enough to me. So people get their wires crossed and I get hurt puppy faces like, “I thought you were nice”. Lol. which is horrible because then I’m really tempted to explain, “But I never, ever told you I was nice though! I’m more practical than anything, really.”

Sometimes people say I’m thoughtful which is really sweet but then again, if I’m totally honest even that thoughtfulness is linked to practicality. For instance, I have a decent memory and so if you tell me you had a job interview, the chances are the next time we see or before we see, I might ring you or message to ask how it went…and perhaps together we can come up with some tips on how to make it work better next time if the interview didn’t go so well.

I think it’s the Oldest Child Syndrome.

There’s a real case for pragmatism. I think it’s a virtue we don’t rate highly enough…but then again, I may be biased.
