I write because I enjoy the feel of fusing words together to give meaning to my thoughts. Sometimes, I am not even certain of how I feel about a thing until I have set my emotions down in visible words. Every few months or so, I reread this George Orwell’s essay on the English language which I reckon every literate person should read at least once in their lifetime titled, ‘Politics and the English Language’, and promise myself to keep trying to improve my writing. I see little improvements in my skill and I am often encouraged when I read my work over time. However, I still make these ‘Orwellian’ mistakes; mistakes he warns us are dangerous to English and disastrous to good writing. I think the worst is perhaps my tendency to go on for a bit when I write, emphasising and over-emphasising my points…but that’s a bad habit I have even when I speak. It’s almost as though I must completely expunge the thought in order to extinguish it and move on to the next. It’s a work in progress, orally and in writing.
Baby steps.
