Promise

We are living in a time where ‘Forever’ actually means ’10 Odd Years if You’re Lucky’. We live at a time where “I Dos” are often really “I Guess I Musts”, where people say one thing while thinking another and doing the exact opposite. We live in contrasting times; times were no one is faithful to promises. Keeping to commitments, to time, to promises are so foreign to the 21st century human. The concept of a promise is in itself becoming obsolete! Today where we can undo writing, delete history, reconstrust our faces, it is not an illogical leap to easily dissociate our minds from assurances we make to others. With this mindset you can imagine how confused I was to read the book of Kings in the bible.

The eponymous book of Kings (I & II) details the histories of the kings of Israel, Samaria and Judah. There were a few good kings and many bad kings who came after the renown king David. The evil kings engaged in all sorts of idolatry, sorcery and sustained unrighteousness. Their leadership encouraged the people of their nations to turn away from God and imbibe a culture of pure unadulterated sin. God was angry time and time again with these people and warned them continuously of the repercussions of sinning.

What truly fascinated me, is the fact that I kept coming across phrases such as “So Jehoram did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. 19 But the Lord did not want to destroy Judah, for he had made a covenant with David and promised that his descendants would continue to rule, shining like a lamp forever.” (2 Kings 9: 9). I was like wait, God are you aware that David died many many years ago?! Or, “23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.” (2 Kings 13:22-23). Meaning what?! Abraham, the patriarch from thousands of years before?! How can one promise shield these wicked people for so long?

But that is God. Over and over again we see examples in the bible of God withholding punishment or indeed releasing blessings on people because of promises He made to their ancestors. God is faithful to His promises and there is no truer truism than that. How do I know? God promised to send Jesus over 500 years before He sent Him to us. “If we are faithless, He remains faithful for He can not disown Himself. He remains faithful to his word and to His righteous character.-2 Tim 2:13 Amplified version.
I love the Message version which says, “If you give up on Him, He CAN NOT give up on you because there is no way that He can be false to Himself.”-2 Timothy 2:13.

Time is not enough to rob God of His ability or desire to do what He promises. That is amazing when you consider how fickle we are as humans; in love today, out of love tomorrow, full of promises yet simultaneously filled with hot air. I thought about this and I was just in awe of God. Sometimes as Christians we think that when evil happens to us, it is a sign of God’s lack of faithfulness towards us. However, the only thing God promises us is that as long as we seek Him we will always find him. He promises us that He is near us always, that in adversity, He will be right there in the eye of the storm holding us. He never promised that bad things would not happen to good people. All He says is, “I Am”…I am here, I am able to hold you, I am able to heal you, I am your foundation, I am your comfort, I am your deliverance, I am your redemption, I am here…for you. Always.

The funniest thing is, I know all this yet, get so upset with God when things don’t go my way.

“I believe, help my unbelief.”-Mark 9:24

P.S: I love Barbies! Actually, I love miniature things in general. One of the reasons I can’t wait to have a daughter is so that I can play with her toys (along with her…maybe sometimes alone…*ahem*), without looking like the weirdo I am. Haha!
